Our research program focuses on studies of the molecular mechanisms of liver regeneration and carcinogenesis. In liver regeneration, hepatocyte proliferation is strictly regulated. Hepatocytes replicate in synchrony but return to quiescence once the liver mass is restored. We are examining the events that initiate liver regeneration. We use knockout and transgenic mice and tissue culture systems to study how quiescent hepatocytes are induced to enter the cell cycle and replicate.
